No. 87 - Fighting Harada

Masahiko "Fighting" Harada was one of Japan's rare international boxing stars, winning titles in the flyweight and bantamweight divisions and cementing his place in history by being the only fighter to ever defeat Brazilian great Eder Jofre.

Harada began his professional career in 1960. He worked his way to his first title fight in October 1962, where he knocked out Pone Kingpetch in the 11th round to win the flyweight championship.

Kingpetch, though, won the rematch in a split decision.

Harada moved up to bantamweight and earned a title shot against Eder Jofre. Jofre was a perfect 50-0 0 and a major favorite. Harada, known for his perpetual motion in the ring, handed him his first loss, winning a split decision.

Harada made another defense before giving Jofre a rematch. This time, Harada won by unanimous decision. This second loss prompted Jofre to retire, although he would make a comeback three years later. The Brazilian eventually finished with a 72-2-4 record with his only losses to Harada.

The second Jofre fight was the pinnacle for Harada. He would defend his undisputed title two more times before losing it to Lionel Rose in 1968. In 1969, Harada tried to get a piece of the title belt back against Johnny Famechon. Boxing great Willie Pep was the referee and sole judge. He originally scored the fight a draw. The Sydney crowd so unnerved Pep with their boing that he claimed he miscalculated and gave the fight to Famechon.

Because of the controvery, the WBC ordered a rematch, this time to be held in Tokyo. Harada knocked Famechon down in the 10th, but the Australian rallied and knocked Harada out in the 14th. Harada didn't fight again.

No. 87 - Terence Crawford

Terence Crawford is a three-division champion who is one of the rare modern fighters to hold all four major belts in a division.

Crawford was a solid amateur who missed out on the 2008 Olympics because of a loss to Sadam Ali. He won his first minor belt in 2013, his 21st bout, with a win over Alejandro Sanabria for the WBO NABO Lightweight title.

He won his first major belt in 2014 by beating Ricky Burns for the WBO lightweight title.

He moved up to super lighweight (or light welterweight) in 2015. He got the WBO belt by beating Thomas Dulorme and added the WBC belt in 2016 by knocking off undefeated Viktor Postol.

In 2017, he added the IBF and WBA belts by knocking out Julius Indongo in the third round. The win put him in rare company. He became just the fourth fighter in the modern era to hold all four belts in a division, joining Jermain Taylor, Bernard Hopkins and Oleksandr Usyk.

Of course, boxing politics quickly got in the way. The IBF ordered Crawford to take on a mandatory challenger in a time frame that didn't fit Crawford's plans so he surrendered that belt. Having cleaned out the division, Crawford chose to move up to welterweight.

He won the WBO welterweight title in 2018 by dominating Jeff Horn, winning by a TKO in the ninth round. He's defended that belt twice.

At 35, Crawford still has time to build on his record and move into the top 50 all-time. He's scheduled to fight former Lithuanian Olympian Egidijus Kavaliauskas on Dec. 14. Errol Spence holds two of the three other major welterweight belts and Phillippino legend Manny Pacquiao holds the other. Wins over either or both would cement his legacy.

He also has no Hall of Fame points in my system. One of his greatest victories was over Yuriorkis Gamboa, who was undefeated when he lost to Crawford. Gamboa is a fringe Hall of Fame prospect. A win over Gervonta "Tank" Davis would improve that argument. Postol was undefeated when he lost to Crawford, but he hasn't done much of note since. Amir Khan could sneak in.

Crawford has been begging for big money fights for years, but the rivalries amongst promoters has left him on the outside looking in. Hopefully, he gets a chance to stake his claim as one of the all-time greats.

No. 88 - Humberto Gonzalez

Mexico's Humberto "Chiquita" Gonzalez was a three-time light flyweight champion who earned his place in the top 100 by winning two of three Super Fights with Michael Carbajal.

Gonzalez built his record by beating non-descript competition in Mexico. The first time he fought outside of his home country was his first shot at a tile. In 1989, Gonzalez traveled to South Korea to win a unanimous decision over Yul-Woo Lee.

After four defenses, Gonzalez suffered a shocking knockout to Rolando Pascua. Gonzalez got the title back by beating the man who beat Pascua, Melchor Cob Castro.

Gonzalez started another string of defenses and fans clamored for a match between Gonzalez and Carbajal.

They finally met in 1993 and it was the first Junior Flyweight fight to lead a Pay Per View event. Gonzalez knocked Carbajal down twice but got caught and knocked out by Carbajal in the the seventh round.

Carbajal fought two more times and Gonzalez won both in split decisions.

Gonzalez fought twice after the final Carbajal match. He was knocked out by Saman Sorjaturong in his final match. Fittingly, Carbajal and Gonzalez were inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in the same year.

No. 89 - Ricardo Lopez

Mexico's Ricardo "El Finito" Lopez has one of the greatest resumes in boxing history.

  • He is just one of just 15 boxing champions to retire without a loss and he's the only one to go undefeated as an amateur as well.
  • He shares the record with Joe Louis and Floyd Mayweather for the most consecutive title bouts without a loss at 26.
  • He has the third longest championship reign for a single weightclass at just under 10 years - behind Louis and Johnny Kilbane.

Yet, in my system, he ranks way closer to No. 100 than he does to No. 1 because of the lack of talent depth at the sport's lightest weights.

For all his title fights, Lopez fought just three unification fights. He beat Alex Sanchez for the WBO and WBC minimum weight title in 1997. In 1998, he fought Rosendo Alvarez for the WBC and WBA titles. The first fight was a technical draw after an accidental headbutt. In the second, Lopez won by a split decision.

Then there's the matter of Lopez's overall competition. As of now, he has no wins against a fighter in a major Hall of Fame. The ones who may someday get in, which would help Lopez move up several spots, are Alvarez, who went 37-4 and was a light flyweight champion, and Anucha Phothong (also known as Rantanopol Sor Vorapin), who was 59-8 and a longtime IBF miniumum weight champion.

Lopez did beat seven fighters during his reign who were undefeated when they met. But he also had title fights against guys such as Jorge Rivera (24-12), Manny Melchor (25-19), Javier Varguez and Myung-Sup Park (11-4).

To get to the top in my system, you have to seek challenges, whether it be unifying belts or seeking out potential Hall of Famers to fight. Perhaps those opportunities didn't present themselves to Lopez. Whatever the reason, Lopez's record, as pretty as it is, was built on a number of soft touces.

No. 90 - Carmen Basilio

Carmen Basilio won both the middleweight and welterweight back when those belts didn't change hands often.

Basilio has just a 7-8-2 record in significant fights, but his wins were big. He lost his first shot at a world title to Kid Gavilan. He earned another title shot by going 7-0-1 in 1954 and made the most of it, knocking out Tony DeMarco in the 12th round in 1955.

He lost that title in 1956 in a decision to Johnny Saxton in a decision that highly likely was bought and paid for by Saxton's manager, Frank "Blinky" Palermo. Basilio showed he was truly the superior fighter by knocking out Saxton in their next two meetings.

Basilio moved up in 1957 to challenge 36-year-old Sugar Ray Robinson. It proved to be Basilio's finest hour. He won a split decision and earned him Ring Magazine Fighter of the Year for the second time. The two fought again and this time Robinson came out on top in another split decision.

Basilio tried to win the middleweight back twice, losing both in knockouts to Gene Fullmer.

No. 91 - Orlando Canizales

Orlando Canizales is a Texas-born bantamweight who set a division record for title defenses but has no real signature wins on his record.

Canizales turned pro in 1984 and earned a fringe title shot by winning his first 12 fights. He lost that shot to Olympic Gold Medalist Paul Gonzalez, who was in just his fifth pro fight.

In 1988, he got his first shot for a major title against unlikely champion, Kelvin Seabrooks. Canizales won by TKO over Seabrooks, who was just 26-13. Canizales would defend that IBF title 16 times. That included a rematch with Gonzales, which Canizales won by TKO, and wins over former flyweight champion Rolando Bohol and British champion Billy Hardy.

Canizales finally gave up the bantamweight belt in 1995 to take on Wilfredo Vazquez for his WBA super bantamweight title. Vazquez beat Canizales in a split decision. Canizales did win a lesser super bantamweight title in 1995 when he beat Julio Cesar Portillo, but he never again fought for a WBO, IBF, WBA or WBC belt.

Although he ended up with a solid career record of 50-5-1 with an excellent knockout record (37 KOs), not a single fighter beaten by Canizales has been inducted into the International, Las Vegas or World boxing hall of fames. The Gonzalaz rematch was the closest thing he has to a highlight victory.
