Thil dominated European competition for years, winning the French middleweight title in 1928 and the European title in 1929. In 1932, Hall of Famer Gorilla Jones ventured to Paris to put his NBA world title on the line. The fight drew 70,000 fans and Thil was well ahead on points when Jones was disqualified for low blows.
Thil defended the title against another Hall of Famer, Len Harvey, but then went more than a year without making a title defense so the NBA stripped him of the title.
Thil retained his IBU title and continued to defend it for several years, including adding the IBU light-heavyweight title in 1934.
He ended his career with four straight fights against Hall of Famers. He beat Lou Brouillard three straight times, all in Paris, with his IBU title on the line twice. He then traveled to New York in 1937 for his only fight ever in the United States. Thil was well ahead on all cards against Fred Apostoli when the fight was stopped in the 10th because of a cut over Thil's right eye.
Thil retired shortly after at the age of 33.
