No. 79 - Benny Leonard

Benny Leonard is one of the most respected pre-1950 fighters of all time.

Ring Magazine put him at No. 8 on its list of the "80 Best Fighters of the Last 80 Years." ESPN had him seventh in its "50 Greatest Boxers of All-Time." Boxing historian Bert Sugar ranked him No. 6 in his all-time top 100. Ring Magazine founder Nat Fleischer had him No. 2 on his personal list.

In my system, he's not in the top 75.

Leonard had a top flight record of 89-6-1 with 70 of those wins coming by KO. He recorded wins over five different Hall of Famers (Freddie Welsh, Johnny Kilbane, Willie Ritchie, Rocky Kansas and Lew Tendler).

The reason he doesn't rank higher is that he had relatively few "significant" fights. Leonard fought in an era where fighters fought a lot, but rarely fought in title fights. Leonard had just seven of those fights in his career. He won the first six but lost the last, a knockout to Jimmy McLarnin.

And of his major victories, only his win over Lew Tendler ended up being worth more than 250 points.

Leonard still can climb a bit in the rankings. Rocky Kansas was never added to the World Boxing Hall of Fame. If he's ever added to the Boxing Hall of Fame of Las Vegas that would bump Leonard up 15 to 20 places on this list. Freddie Welsh and Johnny Kilbane are two others that eventually could be added to the Las Vegas Hall as well, moving Leonard up even further.

No. 80 - Sugar Shane Mosley

Perhaps the best thing you can say about Sugar Shane Mosley is that he ducked no one.

Mosley fought just about every great fighter of his era - Oscar De La Hoya, Vernon Forrest, Winky Wright, Miguel Cotto, Manny Pacquiao, Canelo Alvarez and Floyd Mayweather.

The fact that he lost many of those battles is why Mosley, who at one point was considered the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world, is ranked in the bottom quarter of our top 100.

Undoubtedly, Mosley's greatest victories were over De La Hoya. When they first met in 2003, Mosley had already been a lightweight champion with eight title defenses. Although neither fighter was ever close to being knocked down, both took plenty of damage and Mosley won a split decision.

At that point, Mosley was among the biggest names in boxing.

Vernon Forrest changed that in 2002, knocking down Mosley twice and winning a unanimous decision. The two fought again that year and Forrest won another unaminous decision.

In 2003, Mosley moved back into the upper echelon by winning a unanimous decision over De La Hoya that remains controversial. Punch stats show De La Hoya landed 100 more punches and Mosley admitted in court filings that he injected himself with EPO before the match.

That would be Mosley's last major victory. He lost a pair of fights to Winky Wright, a fighter widely avoided by other contenders. He lost a unanimous decision to then undefeated Miguel Cotto even though both landed the same number of punches. He remained a player in major money fights by upsetting Antonio Margarito, but he was outclassed in matches against Pacquaio, Mayweather and Alvarez.

No. 82 - Harry Wills

Harry Wills was, along with Sam Langford, one of the two greatest heavyweights who never got a chance to fight for the world heavyweight title.

Wills, known as the Black Panther, came close. In 1925, Jack Dempsey signed a contract to fight Wills in 1926 but the match never materialized. Dempsey appeared willing to face Wills, but promoters didn't come through with the financing. The New York State Athletic Commission also would not sanction the bout. Wills also didn't help himself by turning down an elimination bout with Gene Tunney, who went on to end Dempsey's reign.

In the end, what most likely doomed Wills was white America's lasting bitterness over Jack Johnson. Before he died, Dempsey said they couldn't find a city willing to host the fight.

"(Tex) Rickard wanted to make (it), but there was no place you could put it on," Dempsey said. "I wanted to fight him .... (But) they wouldn't let you fight no place."

Wills was able to fight a number of white contenders. He knocked out Fred Fulton and Gunboat Smith and dominated Luis Angel Firpo in a no decision fight. But he mostly was relegated to fighting the other great black heavyweights of his day over and over again. He made it on this list because he dominated those matches.

He fought Langford 22 times, going 6-2 with 14 no decisions. He was 3-1 against the great Sam McVey and had a knockout win over Kid Norfolk. Wills held the World Colored Heavyweight Championship three different times.

When the Dempsey fight didn't happen, an aging Wills took on a rising Jack Sharkey, losing by disqualification in a fight he was getting beaten badly and then getting knocked out by Paolino Uzcudun. Those losses ended his championship hopes.

No. 81 - Lou Ambers

One of the great Depression era fighters, Lou Ambers scored wins against some of the top lightweights of all time.

Giuseppe d'Ambrosio was born Herkimer, New York, and adopted the name of Lou Ambers so that his mother didn't know he was a boxer. Ambers compiled an 88-8-6 record from 1932 to 1941. Those wins included two wins over Tony Canzoneri and Baby Arizmendi and victories over Henry Armstrong, Pedro Montanez and Fritzie Zivic.

Ambers' first win over Canzoneri gained him the lightweight champioship in 1936. Ambers knew Canzoneri well, having sparred with him early in his career. The Herkimer Hurricane dominated the fight, winning nine rounds.

Ambers lost the title in 1938 to Henry Armstrong, who won a split decision to become the first fighter to hold three world titles simultaneously.

Ambers won the title back from Armstrong in a fight where Henry was penalized several points for low blows. Ambers held the title until suffering back-to-back knockouts to Lew Jenkins.

No. 83 - Mickey Walker

Mickey Walker is one of the boxing legends of the early 1900s with one of the very best nicknames - "The Toy Bulldog."

He earned the nickname by fighting anyone anywhere. He was both welterweight and middleweight champion during his career, beating Hall of Famers Tiger Flowers, Lew Tendler, Jack Britton, Dave Shade and Ace Hudkins.

He also took on and lost to such greats as Harry Greb and future heavyweight champions Max Schmeling and Jack Sharkey.

He remains in very high esteem on lots of expert lists. ESPN ranked him 17th on its list of 50 Greatest Boxers and historian Bert Sugar placed Walker 11th on his Top 100 Fighters catalogue. The International Boxing Research Organization has him as No. 16 pound-for-pound.

Yet on this list, he's in the bottom quartile exactly because he took a lot of losses. In his 18 significant fights (title fights or against Hall of Famers), he ended up just 10-7-1.

No. 94 - Deontay Wilder

One of the most tiring or entertaining debates today is whether or not Deontay Wilder is one of the all-time greats or a one-trick pony knocking off a series of tomato cans.

In my system, his recent win over Luis Ortiz moved him into the top 100 fighters all time, but he has a ways to go before he deserves to be in the conversation of top heavyweights ever.

Here are the positives for the "Bronze Bomber."

He has an amazing knockout record, having recorded knockouts in 41 of his 43 fights. No heavyweight ever has that kind of record. He's maximized the points against the fighters they've put in front of him.

Counting his unanimous win over Bermane Stiverne in 2015 to win the WBC heavyweight title, Wilder now has 10 wins in world title fights (so the draw against Tyson Fury is not included). The list of heavyweights who have accomplished that feat is not long. Here are the other heavyweights with 10 plus heavyweight title fight wins: Wladimire Klitschko, Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali, Larry Holmes, Lennox Lewis, Vitali Klitschko, Mike Tyson and Joe Frazier. That's a good list to be on.

Here are the negatives. Wilder has fought no unification fights so he's not racking up a lot of points with each title fight. To really make a run at the fighters above he needs to begin unifying the belts.

He has no Hall of Fame points and needs to take some risks. Right now, the only Hall of Fame bonus points he'll likely receive is for his draw against Tyson Fury. If Luis Ortiz rebounds and wins a title he'd have a shot at the Hall of Fame, which would help Wilder's case. For Deontay to make a run at the top 50 or even top 25 - as some of his supporters already believe he is - he'll need to beat Fury and the winner of the Andy Ruiz/Anthony Joshua fight and then defend those belts successfully against someone like Oleksandr Usyk.

That's a tall task and if Wilder accomplishes it his detractors won't have much of a case. But the clock is ticking. Wilder already is 34 years old.
